Oxford City Clerk Carol Poole is retiring, effective Feb. 28.

Police Chief Clark Miller will serve as interim clerk until Oxford switches to a city manager form of government on July 1, Mayor Jerry Roseberry said Wednesday.

In January, the city agreed to switch to a government with a full-time city manager, but the change can't take place until the Newton County Legislative Delegation completes local legislation authorizing the change.

The city will likely begin searching for a city manager in April or May, pending approval of the local legislation.

"It's just a matter of going through the hoops," Roseberry said.

Miller will continue serving as police chief while working as interim clerk. He served 10 years as an administrative assistant with the DeKalb County Police Department.

"He'll have two hats for a while," Roseberry said.

Poole started work with Oxford in 1990. Miller has been with the city for three years.

Poole said Wednesday that she has no post-retirement plans, but noted that her husband retired two-and-a-half years ago. She said she may do some consulting work with the city.

Deputy Clerk Lauran Willis also remains on the job in support, Roseberry noted.

In other city business, the Oxford City Council on Monday agreed to seek proposals to privatize city sanitation services.

Two city sanitation workers are also retiring effective Feb. 28, and the city wants to determine whether it would be cost-effective to privatize the service instead of hiring new workers.
