COVINGTON, Ga. — Newton and surrounding counties are under a severe thunderstorm watch until late Friday night.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, issued a watch covering 50 counties in north and middle Georgia including Newton, along with 28 counties in Alabama.

The watch expires at 10 p.m. Friday. It extends from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to Athens, Georgia, and south to Macon.
