Porterdale

New 'Little Library'

Porterdale’s sixth "Little Free Library" opened Friday in the Rose Hill Historic District, a historic black neighborhood built by Bibb Manufacturing. The library was painted by local artist Margaret Warfield. Rose Hill resident Eleese McKnight will be the librarian at this location, Mayor Arline Chapman said.

Friendship Parade

Social Circle is planning its 19th annual Friendship Festival Parade, to be held Oct. 5.

Last year a "Pet Parade" was added; it is expected to be even more popular and competitive this year. A new incentive is a $500 prize for best band. Float entries will be eligible for monetary prizes of $150, $100, and $50.

There is no fee for parade participants, but applications must be submitted prior to the event for approval by the parade committee. Applications are available at www.socialcirclegabht.com and at the Welcome Center.

Community Center meeting

There will be a meeting of the Mansfield Community Center committee at 6 p.m. Sept. 17 at the center, located at 3158 Highway 11 in Mansfield.

Road projects

The Georgia Department of  Transportation plans the following mowing and road maintenance projects for Sept. 16–19,  7 a.m.–3:30 p.m. daily, in Newton County: State Route 142, mile marker 0–8.5, tractor mowing; State Route 12, mile marker 10–14, tractor mowing;  State Route 162, mile marker 5–6; lane closure for roadway ditch maintenance.
