Newborn to host annual festival

Newborn is hosting its annual Horneyhead Festival from at 8 a.m. Saturday at the old Newborn Schoolhouse at 4326 Ga. Highway 142.

The event will feature a fishing tournament beginning at 8 a.m. and the winners with the largest fish in various divisions will be featured in the Pied Piper parade starting at 2 p.m. Anyone can participate in the parade, which will go around downtown.

While most people use horneyhead chubs for the unflattering job of bait fish, the townsfolk of Newborn give the chubs their own festival.

The tradition started in the mid-1990s and once gathered around 5,000 people when television personality LeRoy Powell attended the annual fishing competition, said Newborn resident Buddy Rowe, who helped found the event.

The town revived the festival last year. For a full list of events, visit newbornschoolhouse.org and click on the festival tab.

The festival will also feature a flea market, arts and crafts booths, live music and children's activities and plenty of food. Melanie and Julio of WMOQ (92.3 FM) in Monroe will broadcast live from 9 a.m. to noon.
