The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is launching traffic initiatives this summer aimed at keeping motorists in Newton safe. 100 Days of Summer Heat will stretch from May 17 through Labor Day. Click It or Ticket will last May 24 through June 6.
Local law enforcement officers have zero tolerance for excessive speeding, impaired or aggressive driving and occupant protection violations.
"We’ll be looking at everything, but speeding is the big thing," said NCSO Sgt. Randy Downs. "We’re going to be everywhere, especially on the heavily traveled roads as people travel to and from vacations. We just want folks to be safe."
During the Memorial Day weekend, motorists can expect random, nighttime road checks.
"This is about awareness and safety," Downs said. "The goal is not to write tickets, it’s public safety."
The NCSO is stepping up enforcement to force drivers to be more cautious.
I would like to also remind motorists of Georgia’s "Super Speeder" law that went into effect Jan. 1. Anyone caught traveling 85 m.p.h. or over on the interstate will pay an additional $200 fine on top of their citation. On county roads, anyone traveling 75 m.p.h. or more will also pay a hefty additional fine.
"We want people to have a safe and festive Memorial Day weekend," he said.
