The Newton County NAACP will hold its Annual Freedom Fund Banquet at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 at The Events and Banquets Hall, 685 Kirkland Road, Covington. The event is open to the public.
The evening will feature Georgia House Minority Leader Rep. Stacy Abrams. Entertainment will be provided by jazz artist Nancy Price.
This year’s theme is, "We Shall Not Be Moved: The Five Game Changers – Education, Economic Stability, Health, Public Safety & Criminal Justice, and Voting Rights.’’ The theme coincides with one of the NAACP objectives, which is "…to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of all citizens."
During the program, several Newton County citizens and an organization will be honored. They are: Judge Horace Johnson Jr., criminal justice; Ms. Shamica Redding, economic sustainability; Mrs. Louise Adams, T.K. Adams Sr. and Mrs. Zelma Stewart, education; the Newton County Medical Center, health; Sarah Todd, political representation; Sheriff Ezell Brown, public safety; and Mrs. Emogene Williams, voting rights.
The President’s Award will be presented to the Rev. Hezekiah Benton, pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, the Rev. Thomas Stegall, pastor of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, and the Rev. Willie J. Smith, pastor of Word of Praise Community Church and president of the Newton County Ministers’ Union.
This event will also raise funds for $500 college scholarships to be awarded by the NAACP to Newton County students in the 2014 graduating class.
Beginning Nov. 1, graduating seniors can request application packages by emailing newtoncountynaacp@gmail.com. Completed applications will be due to the Newton County NAACP branch no later than Jan. 27, 2014. There will be one winner from each Newton County School System high school, as well as one from the Newton County NAACP Youth Chapter. All winners will be recognized at the Youth Recognition Luncheon in the spring.
