A 45-year-old Newton County woman was fatally shot around 8 p.m. Tuesday, and Aaron Garsua McClain, also age 45 and the women’s alleged domestic partner, is being charged with the murder.

The woman, Betty Mulbah McClain, reportedly died from gunshot wounds at her home on Cinnamon Fern Circle, off Brown Bridge Road west of McGiboney Road, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Felicia Jefferson said both the woman and McClain reportedly shared the home.

The woman’s 12-year-old daughter was shot in the hand, but is alive, "and as far as we know she is recovering," Jefferson said.

McClain’s 3-year-old grandson was also at the scene, but was unharmed.

McClain was not at the scene when Newton County Sheriff’s officers arrived, but he was arrested by a South Carolina state trooper who spotted his vehicle after a B.O.L.O. (Be on the Look Out) notice was issued.

McClain is charged with aggravated assault, possession of firearm during the commission of a felony, cruelty to children 1st degree, and murder.

The Newton County Coroner is working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to officially determine the cause and manner of death, according to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office. The name of the victim who was killed will be released pending further investigation, Jefferson said.
