North central Georgia is once again preparing for an icy situation.

A winter weather advisory will be in effect for Newton, Rockdale and surrounding counties beginning 7 p.m. Monday until 7 p.m. Tuesday. A winter storm watch will also go into effect Monday evening, but will last through Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service, rain mixed with snow and sleet is expected Tuesday with sleet and freezing rain Thursday. The National Weather Service also said up to an inch of snow can be expected from 7 p.m. Monday until 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Rain is expected to fall Monday, mixing and possibly changing to snow or sleet by sunrise Tuesday. As temperatures rise Tuesday, the precipitation will change to rain, before mixing to rain sleet and snow Tuesday evening. By Wednesday morning a mix of sleet and freezing rain is expected before, according to the National Weather Service, turning back into snow Thursday.

Temperatures will be in the upper 30’s Tuesday and lower-to-mid-30’s Wednesday. Winds will be 5-15 miles per hour with gusts up to 25 mph out of the northeast.

The National Weather Service warns: “a winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts. Now is the time to prepare for this winter storm. Be sure to buy non-perishable foods. Make contingency plans if you plan on traveling during this period, if you can change your travel plans.
