Authorities are warning residents to lock their cars and not to leave items of value in plain sight after a rash of entering autos in the western part of the county.

There have been over 35 cases just this month, according to Lt. Tyrone Oliver with the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

Of the vehicles being pilfered, most have been left unlocked and with high-value items in plain sight. Oliver suggested not only locking vehicles, but also taking purses, GPS devices, cell phones, laptops, mp3 players and the like inside, or at least hiding them in the car.

"It will make them a harder target if they secure their cars or take their items inside or hide them," he said.
There has also been an increase in AC thefts in the past few months.

Oliver said they had reports from people after the fact, who said they saw someone suspicious around the homes, but they neglected to call authorities.

"I want people to not hesitate to call 911 if they see someone suspicious. Also, get a description of the person and their vehicle and a license plate number if possible," Oliver said.
