After a man yelled at Covington Police Department officers on how to do their job, he took off running before being tackled and arrested near Thomas Buffet Saturday around 4:30 p.m.

According to reports an officer on patrol in the area of Emory Street saw a white male standing at the wood line, and noticed him throw something at the wood line when he saw him.

When the officer approached the man, he saw that he was wearing a necklace with a marijuana leaf on it. The man, reported, told police that he did not smoke marijuana but supported people who did. The officer reported he saw the man’s hand shake when he handed him his driver’s license, identifying him as Ryan Crews Hodges of Beaver Dam Court.

Another officer picked up the Kamel Red Cigarette pack and asked Hodges if it was his. According to reports, he responded yes.

Within the pack the officer saw what appeared to be marijuana leaves. When the officer showed Hodges, reports said he stated very loudly “that we were not justified to look in the cigarette pack. That he knew that law from being in the police explorer program four years ago.”

According to reports the officer told him to shut up and listen because he was trying to explain it to him. When Hodges tried to make a phone call, CPD said he did not need to call anyone due to the ongoing marijuana investigation.

An officer reached for his left wrist to place him under arrest for possession of marijuana. According to reports Hodges then snatched away and began to run. After being given verbal commands and a “very short chase” an officer tackled Hodges in a grassy area.

“When they hit the ground Hodges rolled on his back and balled his right hand into a fist as if he was going to hit” either officer, the report said.

Another officer reacted quickly and struck Hodges in the face with a left closed fist one time.

Officers then found a marijuana grinder in the form of a watch face and Bob Marley rolling papers. Within the marijuana grinder was a small amount of marijuana.

Hodges was arrested for obstruction, possession of marijuana less than one ounce, possession of drug related items and littering.
