A Covington man was charged with drunk driving after allegedly losing control of his car and crashing into several trees, which left him and his passenger injured.

Jon Douglas Fambrough, 52, was charged with DUI, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, passing in a no-passing zone and a seat belt violation after crashing his car off Smith Store Road around 2:40 a.m. Monday morning, according to Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright.

He was treated for injuries at Atlanta Medical Center before being released and booked in the Newton County Jail.
His passenger also was taken to Atlanta Medical, but no update on his injuries was provided. Fambrough was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro east on Smith Store Road, near Heritage Way, when he attempted to pass another vehicle on a double yellow line.

He reportedly lost control, crossed both lanes of travel, left the roadway, struck a culvert and hit a tree, causing the car to become airborne and strike another cluster of trees before coming to a final rest, upright.

Fambrough was trapped and had to be extricated before being flown to Atlanta Medical, Wright said. The passenger, who did have his seatbelt on, was transported by ambulance to Atlanta Medical.
