"We're participating along with thousands of volunteers throughout the United States in the Great American Cleanup, which is sponsored by Keep America Beautiful," said Connie Waller, executive director of KCNB.
Waller said last year around 350 people volunteered for the cleanup that is generally held on the weekend closest to Earth Day, which is today.
"We've got a goal of 500 volunteers this year," Waller said.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Great American Cleanup, although KCNB has held a cleanup every year since it was organized in 1979.
Those wanting to participate in the cleanup can meet at Kroger on U.S. Highway 278 or Kroger on Salem Road at 8 a.m. Kroger will provide breakfast for the volunteers and KCNB will provide trash bags and gloves. The first 400 volunteers to arrive will receive a free T-shirt.
The cleanup will last until around noon.
Waller said the Dried Indian Creek area adjacent to city hall on Emory Street has been identified as a focus because of Covington's wetlands project on the site. Other volunteer groups will focus on their own neighborhoods, businesses, churches and schools.
In conjunction with the cleanup, KCNB volunteers will be present at the two Krogers, Mayfield's on the square and Wal-Mart on Industrial Boulevard to provide information about recycling and conservation to patrons. Those who fill out a brief survey for the Keep Georgia Beautiful Clean Community Challenge will receive a free reusable shopping tote.
