Legal forum to be held Saturday

The newly formed NewRock Legal Society is hosting a Know Your Rights Forum Saturday to educate the public on the most common legal issues, including bankruptcy, debtor's rights, divorce, child support, criminal prosecutions, estate planning and personal injury law.

A panel of lawyers will teach and take questions from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday at the Nancy Guinn Memorial Library, 864 Green Street, Conyers.

"This event is needed for so many reasons. People should understand their basic legal rights so that they can detect when their rights are being respected or trampled," NewRock President Phinia Aten said in a press release. "Moreover, a well-informed client usually makes for a better prepared case. I teach my clients about the law and legal procedure so they can understand what evidence and arguments will actually matter in court. This event is going to give the public some of the information that usually cost clients hundreds of dollars hourly."

Aten said the event will correspond with U.S. Constitution Day, and she hopes this will be an annual event.

NewRock is a volunteer minority bar association committed to serving Rockdale and Newton counties by improving public trust in the bench and bar through community service initiatives, legal education programming and consequential interaction and collaboration with local government, businesses and non-profit organizations.

The executive board includes Aten, vice president Caycie Dix, treasurer Sherri Washington, secretary Constancia Davis and parliamentarian Tami Wells Thomas.

MDP Management, Rockdale County Superior Court Judge Ruth A. Wilson, Royal Caribbean International and Lifetime Travel are sponsoring the event.
