Storm damage visible in Covington Tuesday morning
Hurricane Irma - Brisco Street

COVINGTON, Ga. - Covington Police Department Captain Philip Bradford said in his 32 years with the City of Covington, the damage from last night's storm was by far the worst he has seen.

"This storm was so powerful, our electric and utilities departments were not able to respond as they typically do, for their safety," Bradford said. "The wind was so strong they couldn’t go in bucket trucks to work on lines. Therefore, when the trees fell on a line we couldn’t cut the trees because the lines were still hot. That’s something I’ve never witnessed, that it got that bad that we could not respond."

Bradford said CPD is working this morning to assist city departments in cleaning up the mess, control traffic and get the city restored to normal operation.

Anyone wishing to report a fallen tree should call 911.

"Please keep in mind the magnitude of what’s affected and please be patient with the city and workers as we try to restore this," he said. "We're obviously going to address the most serious issues first."

The Covington News obtained pictures of damage throughout the city and talked with Bradford about what had occurred.

A tree fell on top of a car on the hotel side of City Pond Road. Bradford said the driver was not injured was able to get out of the car safely. The car, however, was stuck.

Later in the night, Bradford said, another car hit the tree coming from the other direction. The driver of that vehicle suffered minor injuries. When the tree was hit a second time, it freed the first vehicle.

Bradford said a tree fell on top of a mail truck as it was delivering mail Monday.

"Luckily it hit right behind her seat and hit the carrier portion of her truck," he said.

The U.S. Postal Service came to retrieve the rest of the mail from the truck and will return today to have it freed and towed away.

Bradford said the driver of the truck was shaken up and upset from the incident but had no injuries.

Bradford said a large tree still has power lines down. He said he was not completely sure, but figured it was a contributor to the power being out in the area.
