Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office are investigating an attempted break-in Dec. 28 at a home on Salem Road.
According to the incident report, the victim went to bed around 11:30 p.m. when someone began knocking on front door and rattling the knob. When the victim went to the window to investigate, the perpetrator kicked in the backdoor, which sounded the alarm. The victim grabbed a weapon and hid in the car which was in the garage, where deputies found the victim when they arrived.
Nothing was stolen from the home.
Vandals on the loose
Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office are investigating vandalism to several homes in the Bailey Glenn subdivision in Covington. The homes are thought to have been hit some time between Tuesday, Dec. 24 and Monday, Dec. 26.
According to the incident reports, all of the newly built homes had been spray painted. One home also had window damage.

Woman hits car
A Covington woman who reported being hit Dec. 28 by a vehicle in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart on Industrial Blvd. was issued a citation by officers with the Covington Police Department for disorderly conduct.
According to the incident report, Cheryl McCloud reported to deputies that she was talking to another woman in the parking lot when a Ford Explorer struck her twice and left the scene. Officers were able to track down the driver of the SUV, who said McCloud was in the middle of the aisle blocking traffic. The driver told officers when he asked McCloud to move out of the way, she refused and struck his car with her hands. He said he inched his vehicle closer to her, but did not hit her.
A witness confirmed that McCloud was asked to move out of the way and refused to do so. Officers reviewed the Wal-Mart parking lot surveillance tap, which also confirmed the driver’s story.
McCloud was issued a citation for disorderly conduct.
Drunk driver crosses highway
Officers with the Covington Police Department Wednesday charged a Covington man with DUI after his car was found facing north across the westbound lanes on I-20 near exit 90.
According to the incident report, Phillip Mull entered the westbound lanes I-20 at exit 90, crossed the grass between the ramp and the interstate, the grass median, and three lanes of traffic before hitting the median wall head on. His vehicle came to rest facing north with the lights off.
When officers questioned Mull, he was disoriented and appeared to be intoxicated. He told officers he had consumed six beers before getting on the road.
Mull was arrested and transported to the Newton County Law Enforcement Center where we submitted two breaths samples—.261 and .267.
Mull is charged with DUI and failure to maintain lanes.
Burglars try to flood house
Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a burglary Tuesday at a home on Ellis Trail in Covington.
According to the incident report, when the victim arrived at the home around 11 p.m., he saw the interior light on and four men inside the residence. The victim said the men, who escaped out the back door, broke a window between the kitchen and living room, damaged the fireplace, put holes in the wall in the living room, broke a mirror in the bathroom and left the water running in bathroom in an attempt to flood the home.
The victim estimated the damage at $640.
