A woman’s money reportedly went missing after she had a new bed delivered to her home in the Silo’s community.
A report from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy responded to a home on Desota Drive on Jan. 18. There, a homeowner said she had a company deliver a new bed to her residence. Two employees from the company were reportedly in the woman’s home when she said $525 was misplaced.
The deputy spoke with both employees, who reportedly consented to a search of their vehicle and themselves. The deputy discovered the money hidden in the shoe of one of the employees, later identified as Keith Carter of Cornelia.
According to the report, during the search Carter gave false information about his identity and later gave the correct information. Carter was arrested and charged with criminal attempt to theft by taking, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and giving false information to a law enforcement officer. The deputy also found that Carter had a warrant out of Gwinnett County for theft.
Students fight at bus stop?
Two students reportedly got into a fight at a school bus stop Wednesday.
A deputy responded to an address on East Lawn Drive just after 5 p.m., where a woman said her daughter and another girl in the neighborhood got into a fight at the bus stop after school, the report said.
Investigator Michael Cunningham said the students were ages 14 and 15, and no charges were filed in the case.
Nap time leads to arrest
Two men asleep in an SUV stopped at an intersection were awakened by a deputy Tuesday, and one was charged with DUI.
Investigator Michael Cunningham said an NCSO deputy noticed a 2005 GMC Yukon parked at an intersection on Brown Bridge Road, where it appeared two occupants of the vehicle were asleep.
Cunningham said the deputy activated his blue lights, and the driver, later identified as Johnny Hardeman, 38, of Covington, sped away. After a short chase, the vehicle stopped, and Cunningham said the deputy found some open cans of beer in the vehicle.
Hardeman was charged with DUI, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, speeding, failure to maintain lane, failure to stop at a stop sign, fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, and an open container violation. Cunningham said the passenger wasn’t charged in the case.
Vulgar words
A deputy with the Newton County Sheriff’s Officer responded to a home on Brunswick Court Wednesday in reference to damage to property.
A woman reportedly said someone damaged her vehicle by scratching vulgar words into the paint and flattening two of her tires. Investigator Michael Cunningham said the deputy asked the woman if she knew who might have done the damage, and she said that she possibly did, but she didn’t want to say who it was because it might escalate the situation.
Cunningham said it wasn’t clear if the incident happened at the woman’s home or somewhere else. No further details were available.
