The Covington and Newton County fire departments responded to two fires overnight Wednesday and Thursday morning, in the midst of snow from the 2014 winter storm.

The first was a structure fire at an outbuilding on Boogers Hill Road near Highway 81. The Covington Fire Department responded at around 9 p.m., after a homemade wood stove reportedly started the blaze.

No one was injured in the fire.

Both Covington and Newton County responded to a fire early Thursday morning at City Grove Mobile Home Park on Highway 11. A mobile home was half- involved when authorities arrived. According to Covington Deputy Fire Marshall Tony Smith, no one was hurt.

Covington was lending a hand with the fire, after a county fire truck reportedly lost control and spun into a ditch.

Snow continued to fall throughout Wednesday night, leaving Newton County blanketed.

Smith, however, warned Thursday that it still wasn’t safe to travel.

"It’s almost too quiet," he said. "We are figuring today might even be the worst portion of it. Things may be starting to fall, people getting cabin fever and everybody presuming the roads are in great shape. "

Covington roads will still be slick, as plows couldn’t keep up with the amount of snowfall Wednesday evening, according to Deputy City Manager Billy Bouchillon.

Bouchillon added Covington had scattered outages, and one larger-scale outage on Brown Bridge Road and Lake View Drive.

"They probably had 100 or so houses out," Bouchillon said. "We had them back on in about 45 minutes. Other than that it was isolated.

"We really have been dodging a bullet."
