SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. — School officials are taking a wait-and-see approach to the weather with an outdoor graduation planned for Friday night.
Walton and surrounding counties will be under a flash flood watch until Saturday morning, but commencement at Social Circle High School is slated to begin at 8 p.m. Friday.
Superintendent Todd McGhee and Principal Carrie Booher will preside over commencement. It will be the last time for Booher to lead SCHS graduation before she ascends to the position of assistant superintendent of the Social Circle City Schools.
Leading the class will be valedictorian Clara Brooke Ervin and salutatorian Marlee Jean Ruark. The remainder of the top 10 is Thomas Alan Abercrombie, David Slate Allgood, Abby Elizabeth Clegg, Alyssa Tori Ervin, Marlee Walker Gray, Olivia Graham Wager Halleck, Thomas Ellis McGarity Jr. and Brittany Ann Townsend.
Administrators will wait until 6 or 6:30 p.m. Friday to make a decision about the graduation venue. Commencement is scheduled for the football stadium, but if a change is necessary due to inclement conditions, the ceremony will take place inside the SCHS gymnasium.
If graduation is moved inside the gym, each person will need a bright orange ticket with the school’s seal embossed on it. Each student was given eight such tickets Thursday at graduation practice.
Live streaming of the ceremony will take place in the Social Circle Middle School activity center and cafeteria, and no ticket will be necessary to attend in those areas. The ceremony also will be streamed online here.
