School budget forum Thursday at Alcovy High School

Parents with students in the Newton County School System — or just concerned citizens — are invited to attend a budget forum Thursday evening to hear the budget breakdown from Superintendent Dr. Gary Mathews and to ask questions about the possible cuts.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Alcovy High School. Mathews will go over the list of 13 potential cuts and what they would mean to the system as well as how much they would cut from the 2011-2012 budget, which is being pared down $9 million. Deputy Superintendent for Operations Dr. Dennis Carpenter will also speak about the status of the budget. There will be time set aside for those in attendance to ask questions (three-minute limit).

Administrators will attempt to answer some questions that may be asked by the public but have stressed that while they will not be able to answer all questions at the forum, there will be a Q&A document posted on the school system’s website following the forum where answers can be found.
