Stressing over finances may be linked to health problems.

That’s what an event at the Newton Campus of Georgia Perimeter College wants to communicate to the community and its students who attend the event today.

“Wallet and Wellness,” will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the GPC Newton Campus auditorium, building N-2.

The event is free to the public and will focus on the connection between financial and physical health.

Speakers will address nutrition, physical health and health records as they relate to financial stability and overall health during each hour of the event, according to a news release from GPC.

At 10 a.m., Lorne Sam, an ex-NFL player and local fitness trainer, will speak about physical fitness and the health costs associated with an unhealthy lifestyle.

Royce Baker, a financial advisor with the Edward Jones Company, will discuss financial health at 11 a.m.

At noon, Scott Flowers, an expert on public health, will speak about the costs to society when people are not insured against illness and injury.

Then at 1 p.m., Tracy Kuzava, with the Newton Department of Public Health, will discuss making positive food choices and the costs associated with unhealthy eating.

In addition to Kuzava, Lee McKinley, GPC interim director of Health Informatics, will talk about the importance of protecting the confidentiality of personal health care records during the 1 p.m. session.

Leila Lawlor, a business administration instructor at GPC and organizer of “Wallet and Wellness,” said everyone in the community is welcome to the event, which she said will be beneficial to all who attend, particularly students.

“I think it will enrich our students’ lives in the future, not just give them the ability to manage their finances, but also to manage their health and their health records; to learn how to make good choices about what to eat, good choices about physical fitness and also good choices about investments,” Lawlor said.
