COVINGTON, Ga. - Tears and hugs were in abundance Friday afternoon at East Newton Elementary School as students and staff said goodbye to Principal Dr. Kim Coady.

Dr. Coady is retiring after a 23.5-year career with the Newton County School System, the last 10 as principal at East Newton.

Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown was on hand to present Dr. Coady with a proclamation naming her an Honorary Sheriff of Newton County. The school also dedicated an outdoor book library to Dr. Coady.

Through tears Dr. Coady thanked her students and staff for the send-off.

“I cannot thank you enough. There are not enough words to tell kids, staff, y’all have no idea what you mean to me,” she said.

“And it doesn’t matter what I’ve done before or what I’ll do after. East Newton will always be my proudest moment because you never let us down. I still say we’re the best school in the whole world and we have the best staff. And our kids are the best.”

Referring to the outdoor book library, Dr. Coady added. “This is the best thing you could ever do to remember me because if you can read, you can do anything.

“Teachers, if you don’t teach them anything else except reading, writing and arithmetic and how to be a good person, you’ve done it all. Keep reading. Reading will forever take care of everything.”
