Akin appointed vice chair, running for re-election
Charlie Akin

Charles M. “Charlie” Akin was elected vice chairman of the Social Circle Board of Education, and the first-term board member has announced he is running for re-election.

“I will be campaigning aggressively for re-election to the school board for a second term,” Akin said in a statement.

“Our plans have been energized by measurable improvements and outstanding results in both our schools and in local support for education from the business community. My campaign has drawn on the personal experiences of multiple family members in public education as well as my children and grandchildren who, we are proud to say, have (been) and are attending public school in this area.”

Akin is running for the vacant seat. Opposing him is Sabrina R. Sanford-Flint.

Board members appointed Akin vice chairman at their Sept. 14 meeting, succeeding John Callahan. He will serve out the remainder of the year.

Callahan recently resigned the District 1 school board seat to run for Board of Education chairman after Tim Lemonds’ decision not to seek re-election. Jessica L. Hutcheson, Cassie D. Jones, Tonia Lumpkin and Kimberley B. Donaldson all are running to fill out the term in the 1st District.

The board voted to appoint Patrick Dally to serve in District 3 for the remainder of the year.

The municipal election will be Nov. 7, but the last day to register to vote is Oct. 10.
