Winter storm headed to Newton County

With snowy conditions expected to reach Newton County Tuesday afternoon, the Newton County School System has decided on early dismissal.

Elementary schools will release at 11:15 a.m., followed by high schools at 12:15 p.m. and middle schools at 1:15 p.m. There will be no after school academic programs or extra-curricular activites Tuesday, according to a press release sent by Sherri Davis-Viniard. Only first session Ombudsman students should report Tuesday.

Snow and sleet is expected to come through portions of north central georgia, mainly along a line from Franklin to Peachtree city to Lexington from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 1 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service temperatures are expected to drop into the 20’s Tuesday afternoon, into the teens that evening and getting to the middle 30s Wednesday. Winds 10-15 miles per hour, with gusts up to 20 mph are also expected.

Newton County is keeping a close eye on the forecast, according to Chairman Keith Ellis, and will determine if a course of action is necessary at 9 a.m. meeting Tuesday.

The National Weather Service is warning snow and ice may be on roads beginning Tuesday afternoon and into Wednesday, and to travel only in case of an emergency.
