Director of free clinic wins Pat Patrick Big Heart Award

The second annual Pat Patrick Big Heart Award was given to Ed Jenkins Tuesday at The Center for his work as director of the free Willing Helpers Medical Clinic.

The award is named after Pat Patrick, the founding chair of the Newton Fund, and is given to a person who changes Newton County through their volunteerism. Jenkins was given the award because his free medical clinic has helped thousands of people over the past three years.

Located at Solid Rock Baptist Church on Brown Bridge Road, Willing Helpers is open every Thursday to help poor and uninsured residents who can’t afford traditional medical care. Local doctors in a variety of fields donate time at the church and also accept clinic referrals at their regular office.

The Newton Fund, a non-profit group that supports and helps fund other non-profits, donated $2,000 to Jenkins, who was able to give the money to a non-profit of his choice. Jenkins chose to give the money to the Solid Rock Baptist Church because of its help in housing the clinic.
