DeKalb police helicopter crashes at Covington airport
Two injured, taken to Atlanta Medical Center

A DeKalb County Police Department helicopter crashed and caught fire about 4:45 p.m. Friday at the Covington Municipal Airport.

According to Capt. Rob Christopher of the Covington Fire Department, two DeKalb County officers were working on maneuvers when the helicopter crashed. The officers sustained minor injuries and were transported to Atlanta Medical Center

Mekka Parish, a spokewoman for DeKalb police, said the pilot was out on a re-certification exercise with a trainer and aparently engaged in a low-flying exercise when the craft crashed. The pilot had no visible injuries and the trainer sustained some lacerations, according to Parish. Names of the two officers were not released early Friday evening.

Christopher said fire officials are waiting on members of the Federal Aviation Administration to arrive and begin their investigation.
