COVINGTON, Ga. – Authorities arrested a 17-year-old on a misdemeanor marijuana charge after responding to unlock his car door.

According to a Newton County Sheriff’s Office incident report, a deputy was dispatched to a vehicle lockout in the Kroger parking lot on Salem Road Sept. 21 just before 9:20 p.m.

As the deputy was opening the vehicle, he reportedly smelled the odor of marijuana. He looked down at the driver’s side door panel and saw a cigar with a green, leafy substance coming out the end.

The driver reportedly told the deputy that the substance was marijuana and was arrested charged with marijuana possession, less than an ounce and possession of drug-related objects.
