PORTERDALE, Ga. - A wedding was interrupted as the Porterdale Police Department (PPD) arrested a Covington man for boating under the influence (BUI) Saturday night after a pontoon boat became disabled on the Yellow River near the dam.

According to a PPD report, at 9:10 p.m. April 15, officers responded on a citizen assist request for a person in a disabled boat. On their arrival, according to the report, Officer Jerry Lee Roberts and Matt Munger observed a pontoon boat occupied two males.  One of the males, 36-year-old Nicholas Minter, was holding on to a tree limb to stop the disabled pontoon boat from going over the dam. The other, 21-year old Kameron Minter was reportedly trying to get the boat started. According to the report, both men appeared to be intoxicated and unsteady on their feet.

Roberts, the first officer at the scene, reportedly told the Kameron to stop trying to start the boat and assist Nicholas in holding tree limbs to stop the boat from floating over the dam. According to the report, Kameron began cursing and using vulgarities toward the police, telling them to leave him alone among other things. According to the report he refused to stop yelling and cursing when told by Roberts to do so. People who had gathered on the bridge to watch the incident and guests, including children, of the interrupted wedding reportedly witnessed the profanity-laced tirade.

Newton County Fire Rescue (NCFR) was requested to help with securing the boat and getting it to shore. Firefighters devised a plan to get the boat to shore and prepared to throw a rope to anchor it. According to the report, the men were advised multiple times to stay where they were and a rope would be thrown to them.  

After a short time, according to the report, Kameron Minter was able to get the boat started and began driving it upstream. According to the report, as the boat drove away, he began to scream, according to the report, “(Expletive deleted) you, (expletive deleted) the police.”

A tipster reportedly identified Kameron for police and they were able to get an address for him. According to the report, Roberts, Munger and Cpl. Dickerson of the Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) responded to Kameron’s address on Ram Drive.

According to the report, a short time after their arrival, officers observed the boat pull up to the riverbank with Kameron still operating the controls. When approached by officers, he reportedly balled up his hand into a fist, raised his arms in a fighting stance and advanced toward Munger.  According to the report, Munger drew his city issued Taser and after many verbal commands to get on the ground, he complied.

Kameron Minter was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, BUI and operating a vessel without lights. Nicholas Minter was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. While he was being searched, a loaded handgun was reportedly found in Nicholas’ pocket. According to the report, it was determined that the weapon belonged to Kameron.

Both men were transported to the Newton County Jail.
