MONROE, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into a police-involved shooting in Walton County.

One person died after he was shot at by six sheriff’s deputies and a Social Circle police officer.

It happened at a residence on Social Circle-Fairplay Road in southern Walton County on Thursday and involved the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

Nelly Miles of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Walton County 911 got a call about an intruder riding an ATV at the home.

The sheriff’s deputies who responded made contact with the man, who fled.

“A foot chase ensued,” Miles said, “followed by a physical altercation in the field that was approximately 300 yards behind the house.

“Preliminary information suggests that the suspect was overpowering the deputy during that altercation,” Miles said. “He drew his service weapon and fired one round. At this point, we don’t know if the subject was struck when the deputy fired that one round.”

It was not immediately clear if the first shot struck the suspect.

By then, Georgia State Patrol troopers, rangers from the Department of Natural Resources and Social Circle police officers responded to the scene and joined the pursuit.

“The subject was then spotted in a lake about 600 yards south of the original altercation site, and there was a GSP that actually observed the subject turn toward the shoreline and brandish a weapon,” Miles said.

“At that time, multiple officers fired at the subject and he was deceased at the scene.”

The late suspect’s name has not been released pending notification of the next of kin.

A sheriff’s deputy was treated at a hospital for injuries sustained in the skirmish and released.

After a review by GBI, the facts of the case will be turned over to District Attorney Layla Zon’s office. Miles said that typically takes 60 to 90 days.

This is the second deputy-involved shooting in Walton County this year, after a domestic disturbance call on Lovers Lane near Monroe led to the shooting death of 26-year-old Chauvis Hollis in June. Hollis allegedly shot a family member, resulting in a deputy firing at Hollis.

The incident in Social Circle would be the second officer-involved shooting in Georgia on Thursday. Atlanta police called in the GBI to investigate after a car struck an officer, who discharged a gun, striking the vehicle. In the Atlanta case, it was not known if anyone was struck.

The Walton County case Thursday is the 53rd officer-involved shooting this year in Georgia.
