Man airlifted after being pinned under van

COVINGTON, Ga. – A Newton County man was flown to an Atlanta trauma center Sunday after being pinned under a van he was working on.

According to a Newton County Sheriff’s Office incident report, personnel from Newton County Fire, NCSO and EMS were dispatched to 3501 Salem Road at 12:30 p.m. March 18 on a report that a man was trapped under his vehicle.

When they arrived, first responders found the man, identified as Mark Helms, pinned under his Dodge van. Firefighters used a jack to raise the vehicle off of Helms and cribbing to secure the van while he was removed. Once he was extricated, Helms was treated and assessed by Fire and EMS personnel and loaded into an air ambulance for transport to Atlanta Medical Center.

According to the NCSO report, Helms was underneath the van working on it when it rolled forward on top of him, pinning him. His condition was not released.
