A 21-year-old Covington woman was killed Saturday night, in a single car crash on Flat Shoals Road.

Cecilia Gonzales was the passender in a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado, being driven by 22-year-old Steven Aguilar, also from Covington, when the crash occurred around 8:45 p.m.

According to reports from the Georgia State Patrol, Aguilar was driving eastbound on Flat Shoals and approaching Ga. Highway 36, when his vehicle left the roadway on the right side. He reportedly overcorrected, causing the truck to travel back onto the road, across the westbound lane and off the north shoulder. The vehicle then struck a tree with the front passenger side.

Both Aguilar and Gonzales were ejected from the vehicle.

Aguilar was transported to Grady Hospital by Newton County EMS with serious injuries. Gonzales was transported to Atlanta Medical Center where she passed away shortly after arrival.

Alcohol will be a contributing factor to the crash and test results and charges are pending at this time.
