COVINGTON, Ga. – Five of Newton County’s 11 Convenience Centers will close Friday when the county’s current fiscal year ends.
The centers located at Hwy 212/Hwy 16, Hazelbrand Road, McGiboney Road, Dial Mill Road and Cook Road will cease operating at the end of business June 30. Friday is also the last day the $50 hang tags can be used.
Starting Saturday, centers located at Adams Circle, Stone Road, Stewart, Piper Road-36 and Oak Hill will be open from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday for bulk waste, household trash, yard waste and recyclables. The fee for the hang tag to use them is $145.
The Bypass center at 11575 Covington Bypass Road will be open and accept yard waste and recyclables only during the same hours as the full service centers. The fee for that hang tag is $24.
The $145 hang tag allows access to all six of the centers. All hang tags are on sale at the Newton County Historic Courthouse from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tags can also be purchased online at ncboc.com/online-services/residential-user-access-program or through the mail by printing out an application form from ncboc.com and mailing it to 1113 Usher St., Covington, Ga. 30014.
New tipping fees for commercial trash haulers using the county landfill also take effect this weekend. Starting July 1, haulers will be charged $39 a ton to dump trash at the landfill. Private citizens and commercial haulers will pay a base charge $15 for the first 500 pounds of trash dumped. All amounts charged at the landfill will be rounded up to the nearest dollar.
