Oxford council approves Pierce Street changes
Oxford

OXFORD, Ga. - The Oxford City Council voted Monday night to approve an Oxford College plan to make changes to Pierce Street.

The plan, detailed by Dean Douglas Hicks, adds parking, curbs and gutters, as well as storm water management to Pierce Street.

“It will extend the reach of the campus to Emory Street. It will help fellow citizens and those passing by to know that we’re here,” he said. “We think it will beautify, but also connect our students to the center of the city as well.”

Hicks said there will be a loss of five parking spaces at the Pierce and Whatcoat Street corner to make the intersection safer and easier to navigate for pedestrians and cars. He said the Fleming Parking Lot will add 29 parking spaces.

In asking for the council’s support, Hicks said, “We think it will add a great deal. It improves Pierce Street in terms of being able to handle more traffic as well. It will be safer and more beautiful for the city and the campus as well.”

The council approved the Pierce Street proposal as well as a college proposal for parking on Asbury Street. Both measures passed 6-0.
