UPDATE: Man dies after altercation
19 year-old was shot during altercation at Lakeside Circle

COVINGTON- A 19-year-old man was shot Monday evening during an altercation at Lakeside Circle, according to Newton County Sheriff's Deputy Felicia Jefferson. The man, identified as Malik Muschett, a resident of Newton County, was later pronounced deceased. 

Muschett has been transported to the GBI crime lab where an autopsy will be completed by the Medical Examiner's Office to determine an exact cause and manner of death.

No arrest warrants have been obtained at this time.

This case has been assigned to a team of investigators with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division as this incident is currently under investigation, and witnesses are being interviewed.

At around 5:10 p.m., deputies responded to a penetrating trauma call off of Fairview Road. On arrival, it was reported that several men and women were in a resident's yard when several vehicles pulled up and an altercation ensued between some the occupants of the vehicle and some of the people in the yard.

During the altercation, a firearm was produced and several shots were fired, hitting the man, who was transported to Newton Medical Center.

The investigation is still active and ongoing.
