Serving the homeless

Rev. Bobby Mitchell served up soup and turkey sandwiches to homeless residents Tuesday at Repairers of the Breach on Old Brown Bridge Road.

Shirley Smith, who operates Repairers of the Breach, said Mitchell and Rod Myers came to her with the idea of serving meals at the facility. She said Disciples Outreach Ministries and Journey Church are working together on the new effort, which may soon include renovations at Repairers of the Breach for a shower and a washing machine.

“One ministry can’t do it,” Smith said. “We’re all going to come in together. All the churches and people who want to help, that’s fine. We’re just trying to network with everybody and let them know we’re starting this.” Residents also can donate proceeds metal recycling at Allied Recycling on Highway 36, Myers said. “That money will be used to continue what we’re doing Tuesdays and Thursdays,” he said.
