Memorial for Bertha Goss at 1 p.m.

Former Covington Councilwoman Bertha Goss died Thursday night, according to officials at Lester Lackey Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday at the New Beginning Full Gospel Ministries, 453 Oxford Road, Oxford.

She served on the council from 1994 to 2005, and was also one of the county's first black business owners, opening Bertha's Beauty Lounge more than 30 years ago and introducing the weave hairstyle to Covington.

Goss was born in Atlanta in 1923 and moved to Covington around 1967, according to a previous article in The News.

She volunteered with several organizations, including Keep Covington/Newton Beautiful, and was an active member at New Beginning Full Gospel Ministries.
