Residents of all ages are welcome to come to Family Safety Fun Night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday at the Covington Walmart, 10300 Industrial Boulevard.

The Covington Fire Department is hosting the annual event for the third time in honor of National Fire Safety Week as it seeks to bring awareness of fire safety issues to the community.

Attendees can expect free raffles and prize giveaways, one of which will include a bicycle (for a boy or girl) that Walmart donated for the cause. The fire department will also have a creative dog mascot name contest.

However, the event's focus is to teach about and demonstrate the importance of fire safety. Fire Safety Educator Randy Ross, who has been with the fire department for the past eight years, said its imperative to have two ways out of your home in case of an emergency, to be able to become rapidly ready for an emergency and to not be lackadaisical.

The event is also being sponsored by Covington Police Department, Newton Medical Center, the Newton County Sheriff's Office, Covington-Newton County 911, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Georgia Forestry Commission.

For more information on the event contact the fire department at (770) 385-2100.
