The Covington City Council, Newton County Board of Commissioners and Newton County Industrial Development Authority are holding a joint work session at 4 p.m. today at Covington City Hall to discuss potential land acquisition and industrial development.

Covington City Manager Steve Horton said all discussion would likely take place in executive session and be closed to the public.

Land acquisition discussions are routinely held in executive session, because a public discussion could hinder the government body's ability to negotiate a price and allow real estate speculators to drive up the price. Under Georgia law, a government cannot vote in executive session but must vote in an open meeting.
