The Chi Tau Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. hosted a Read-In at Stonecrest Mall on Feb. 9.
The event ran from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help emphasize the importance of reading by having members of Chi Tau Omega and members of the chapter’s two youth groups, Emerging Young Leaders and Ivy Prep, read in public.

Attendees of the event also had the opportunity to read books that were provided by Chi Tau Omega and watch a video of the Woolworth Lunch Counter Sit-In.

Reading experts were also available to provide parents and teachers with information useful in helping children become better readers.

The youths who participated in the Read-In expressed excitement and appreciation for the opportunity.

“It was a fabulous and interesting way to reenact the Woolworth Lunch CounterSit-In,” said Emerging Young Leaders member Jayla Ores.”

“Preparing for the Read-In was a lot of work, but it was for a good reason, and it made me think about the sacrifices that were made,” said Kailyn Randolph of the Emerging Young Leaders.

Attendees of the Read-In also expressed pleasure with and appreciation for the event.

“I think the idea of having a Read-In was brilliant because it helps people remember important historical events and instills in them the idea of standing for something,” Felecia Walker said.
