Tropical Nails first opened on Floyd Street five years ago, and it remained there until a location on the square became available two years later. Since then, the business has been thriving, with a growing presence on the square.
"A lot of people come here and relax," said Martin Pinsky, who helps wife and owner Gracie Pinsky with the business. "It's a place to meet new friends and enjoy the little bit of free time they have."
Providing a warm community atmosphere, Tropical Nails offers a number of services, with a specialization in Gelish nails, a type of nail polish that protects the natural nail without the drilling and filling. Cured under a UV lamp and offered in dozens of attractive colors, the gel is known to be chip-free and lasts for two to three weeks. It is also less harmful than traditional polish and helps with healthy nail growth.
"We don't use any chemicals - there just isn't any smells in the place," said Pinsky. "I'd like to say we go green. We only use natural and quality products. This is a trend now, but Gracie began getting into it years ago before it became popular."
Other services include nail-soaking and shaping, cuticle conditioning and stress-relieving hand massages. Luxurious treatments - natural scrubs with soothing oils, like tangerine, grapefruit and lavender - are also available for those in need of deeper relaxation. A hydrating hand and arm massage using blends of honey, milk and butter is also available.
While pedicures, with a variety of choices and styles, are also available, the salon also provides hair stylists on staff. Pinsky plans to expand the number of hair stylists this year. Feather extensions are currently available as well.
Children up to ten-years-old also have a chance to spend some time with their mothers in style. The business offers a "pampered princess" special, which provides a foot soak and scrub, foot massage, nail filing, nail polish and even nail art.
"Customers don't have to worry when they come here," said Pinsky. "They're here to relax; if they need to kill some time while they're waiting for an appointment, they can come in, relax and get a massage."
