Mitcham Farm on West Macedonia Church Road in Oxford has been family operated for more than 100 years.

On around 400 acres the Mitcham’s grow strawberries, sweet corn, tomatoes, peppers, okra, squash, beans and peas. Kevin Mitcham said this time of year the farm is mainly busy with sweet, red strawberries.

"The time is just right for picking them," Mitcham said of the little fruit.

Guests to the farm can pick strawberries seven days a week — from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday — as long as they call ahead.

Gallon buckets are provided to those who want to pick their own strawberries. If you pick your own, a gallon of strawberries costs $10. Pre-picked gallon buckets cost $12.

This spring the Mitchams began allowing school and church groups up to 50 children to visit the farm for field trips. The cost is $5 per child and includes a clam shell bucket that the children can fill with strawberries, a coloring book and a scoop of homemade ice cream. Mitcham said he also teaches the children about how strawberry plants grow and what he does as a farmer as an educational component to the field trips.

Mitcham said he hopes the strawberries can be picked throughout May, weather depending. Last year he and his father and brother — Tommy and Keith — who work the farm with him, cultivated 13,000 strawberry plants. This year they have 18,000.

He said by the end of June or early July the vegetables grown on the farm should be ready to purchase.

In fall the farm plays host to a giant corn maze.
