The Covington City Council will vote on the contested annexation and rezoning to city heavy industrial of 160 acres of land along Ga. Highway 142 and Airport Road, at 6 tonight at city hall.

The Industrial Development Authority owns the land and requested the annexation and rezoning, because it said the state will not market the property unless it is ready for development. The Covington Planning Commission approved the authority’s request 4-1 at its Nov. 9 meeting, with member Greg Shy opposing because of traffic concerns.

Member Eula Hardeman recused herself because she had previously signed a petition in opposition to the rezoning. The petition garnered around 90 signatures and dozens of residents showed up to the Nov. 9 meeting, including many who spoke in opposition.

- In other council news, Triple Horse Productions will be making a request Monday to close the square on Dec. 18 to film a car stunt.

- The council will vote to finalize its 2011 SPLOST list.

- An electrical consultant will brief the council on expected electricity cost increases in calendar year 2011 resulting from the planned outages of several power plants for maintenance.

- The council will again discuss applying for a grant to build a pedestrian bridge parallel to the existing vehicular bridge, part of Ga. Highway 81, that crosses Interstate 20 and connects Covington and Oxford.

- County Special Projects Coordinator Cheryl Delk will also present an application for a grant to help with the proposed trail from the Covington Branch Library to Eastside High School.

- The Board of Commissioners will hold its meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday at the Historic Courthouse and will also discuss the library to Eastside trail. In addition, it will discuss the possible abandonment of Towns Lane, a new juvenile program that would be run by the juvenile court and the local department of family and children services and a contract for the management of recycling centers.
