Several members of the Covington Family Y reportedly saw a man break into two vehicles and then leave the scene with stolen items Thursday.

A report from the Covington Police Department said an officer responded to the family wellness center located at 2140 Newton Drive around 9:30 a.m. and spoke with two women who reported that their vehicles had been entered.

In one case, a woman told the officer that a black male had broken into her 2011 Ford Taurus by knocking glass out of the left rear door. The report said once the man was inside the vehicle, he lowered the back seat where he was able to remove the woman’s purse from inside of the trunk. The woman’s purse reportedly contained $600 in cash, her driver’s license, a Newton Federal Bank debit card and other debit cards.

In another case, a Social Circle woman said the same man broke the window out of her 2008 Acura. The report said nothing was taken from inside the vehicle, but the door to the vehicle was damaged. The woman’s vehicle was parked on the side lot of the YMCA. Witnesses described the offender as a black male in his 30s, around 200 pounds, wearing a blue hoodie with white drawstrings. People inside the YMCA at the time of the theft said the man left in a blue Mercedes SUV, which had a Florida tag.

In response to the incident, the Covington Family Y has posted to its Facebook page several guidelines to help its members prevent break-ins to their vehicles. Some include removing valuables, locking car doors and windows, and placing valuables in the trunk before arriving to a location.
