BOC to re-apply for two grants

The Newton County Juvenile Court received permission from the Board of Commissioners to reapply for two grants.

The first grant was a $75,000 grant for the juvenile drug court, which has been in existence in Newton County for many years, said Diana Summers, a research analyst at the juvenile court. The grant does not require a local match.

However, new this year, a juvenile court is also being started in Walton County.

Newton and Walton counties together form the Alcovy Judicial Circuit, which means the counties share superior court judges and district attorneys.

Commissioner Nancy Schulz commended the juvenile court for the excellent job it does with the drug court.

The goal of the program is to help youths work through issues without having to serve time in jail.

The juvenile court is also reapplying for a $32,000 grant for its Girl STEPS program, which stands for Sisters Teaching Empowering Parenting Sisters.

The Georgia Department of Human Services supports the program to help adolescent girls redirect disruptive behavior and improve family relationships.

There is a $10,700 local match, but Summers said that will be met with in-kind services.

NCSO purchases Tahoe

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is purchasing a 2013 Chevy Tahoe for $26,404.30 from Ginn Motor Company; the car will be used a command staff vehicle, Sheriff Ezell Brown said.

The money will come from the sale of 20-plus sheriff’s office vehicles that took place in December, Brown said.

Those vehicles were replaced with vehicles purchased with 2011 SPLOST monies. Brown said Ginn provided a $7,500 discount from its original price.

The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the purchase.
