Newton County honored its fallen heroes with two Memorial Day observations on Monday.

On the Square downtown, names of Newton County residents who had died in service were read in an observance staged by American Legion Post 32.

Former state Sen. John Douglas was the keynote speaker, focusing on honoring Viet Nam war veterans. A wreath was placed on the square at the war memorial.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2938 held a service at Lawnwood Cemetery to put flags on the final resting places of local veterans.
