World War I was supposed to be "the war to end all wars" but unfortunately didn’t live up to that name.

Since 1918, American troops have seen action in 44 years worth of conflicts, ranging from World War II to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

To honor those veterans, the Rev. Mark Miller and the Rev. Matt Murphy of Greater Love Baptist Church in Covington, are staging a 44-mile walk.

The walk will take place on U.S. Highway 278 and will start at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10 in downtown Greensboro and end the next day on the square in Covington by 11 a.m. for the Veterans Day ceremony, according to Miller, youth pastor at the church and an Iraq war veteran.

"We were trying to find a way to honor all the veterans who have fought in different wars," Miller said.

Veterans and others are invited to participate. Each mile will represent a different year of war involving American troops, beginning with World War I. After each mile representing the end of a conflict, participants will pray and honor the sacrifices made by the veterans of that war.
