JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) — A jury hearing the racketeering trial of Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill has found him not guilty of more than 20 charges of theft and giving false statements.

Hill was acquitted Thursday afternoon after jurors returned from a lunch break to vote on five charges. Testimony in the trial lasted four days, and Hill did not take the stand.

Hill was elected last year despite being under indictment on felony corruption charges. He wasn't in office when he was indicted in February 2012, but the charges stem from his previous term as the county's sheriff, from 2005 to 2008.

The indictment accuses Hill of using his office for personal gain. His attorneys argued the indictment was a politically motivated attack.
