A group of diverse musicians will perform at McKibben Music’s open-air recital in the Square. The event is free and open to the community.

Mack McKibben, owner of McKibben Music and musician in Drive Time Band launched the first concert seven years ago to showcase what student talent. Sunday, July 7 marks the second concert since, and McKibben couldn’t be happier.
“The first recital we ever had was out there in the park,” he said. “We set up a grand piano, had some guitars and a little group performed. All participants participating in this are all students and there will be teachers as well.”

At 7 p.m. the group of participants ages 8-37 will perform all kinds of music – from “Pop Goes the Weasel” to Aerosmith to Johnny Cash to gospel. In addition, there will also be violinists, vocals, guitar and piano.

The school typically has both a fall and spring recital for their students, but this is their first year hosting a July concert. They offered lessons in summer months to keep students active and involved. The concert is a major incentive for the roughly 230-strong group of summer students coming attending weekly lessons. Five out of the 10 teachers will participate, along with 20 total students.

Past performer of note Logan Robertson took lessons there before he recently graduated from The Atlanta Institute of Music. McKibben’s school helps people of all ages, like a 76-year-old student who took drum lessons.

“It’s going to be a fun little old concert,” McKibben said. “[It is] laidback; people can bring chairs and blankets and sit on the lawn.”

Music will last for about an hour and 15 minutes, so anyone passing by can stop for live music at the Square.
