The Nutcracker returns

One of the most popular events in The Arts Association in Newton County’s annual program series is upon us — the seventh annual performance of the Nutcracker Ballet

Featuring the Covington Regional Ballet and several special guest dancers, residents can catch a showing of The Nutcracker on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. or on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 3 p.m. Performances will be held at Porter Hall at Newton High School.

"Every time people see this Nutcracker for the first time … they are absolutely floored that Newton County has this level and quality of ballet and dance," said Buncie Lanners, executive director of The Arts Association.

Admission is $22 for adults, $19 for senior citizens and $10 for students and children.

As in past years, The Nutcracker is directed by Jaime Robtison.

"She is truly the brains behind it all," Lanners said. "She has the vision. She trains these girls day in and day out."

This year’s performance will be especially poignant said Lanners as a number of the Covington Regional Ballet’s dancers are seniors in high school, including Lanners’ own daughter, so this will likely be their last year dancing in the Nutcracker.

The Nutcracker is sponsored by SteelCo Buildings and Wagner Service Solutions.
