Bertha Roquemore, age 100, from Marietta, Georgia, passed away on January 6, 2009. Services will be held at 11 AM, on Saturday, January 10, 2009, in the chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Rd., in Covington, Georgia, with Rev. Ray Barfield officiating. Interment will follow at Lawnwood Memorial Park. Mrs. Roquemore was born in Covington, Georgia, on August 15, 1908. She grew up on the mill village and was valedictorian of her graduating class. She attended GSCW in Milledgeville, Georgia. Upon graduation, she became a school teacher and taught for several years. She married John Carlton Roquemore, Sr., in 1930. They had four children, two of whom are still living. They were married for 67 years. Her husband passed away in 1997. The church was an integral part of her life, and she was very active in the work of the WMU at White Oak Hills Baptist Church, Decatur, Georgia. After retirement, they moved to Oxford, Georgia, and became active in the First Baptist Church of Oxford. During the time she lived in Marietta at Savannah Court, an assisted living facility, she attended most of the services that were held there, led by members of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, in Marietta. Survivors include her two children, John Carlton Roquemore, Jr., and Pearl Roquemore Barfield; son-in-law, Raymond D. Barfield; three grandchildren, Laura Roquemore Kymla and her husband, Jeff Kymla, of Costa Mesa, California; Raymond C. Barfield and his wife, Karen Clay Barfield of Chapel Hill, NC, and Carole Barfield Roberts of Portland, Oregon. Also included are three great-grandchildren, Brittany McLemore of Costa Mesa, California, Micah and Alexandra Barfield of Chapel Hill, NC. She is predeceased by one grandson, John Carlton Roquemore, III of Los Angeles, California. The family will receive friends at Caldwell and Cowan Funeral Home from 10 AM to 11 AM the same day as the service.
