COVINGTON, Ga. – Area children got a chance to meet Covington police officers, human and K9, play in bounce houses and lunch on hot dogs and chips Tuesday as Covington Police Who Care and the Nelson Heights Community Center hosted the first-ever “Kids and Cops Day” at the center.

Nelson Heights CEO and Covington City Councilmember Anthony Henderson said the event was an opportunity for neighborhood kids to get to know local cops on a new level.

“I think kids, in this community, when they see law enforcement, they’ll see a whole different perspective,” he said.

Henderson estimated the number of kids in attendance at 100 or so. He said he hopes to make "Kids and Cops” an annual event.

Captain Ken Malcom talked about what the event meant for CPD.

“First of all, it does a lot for the officers,” he said. “Just to have an opportunity to get out and interact with the children and let them see us in a different light.

“And it’s fun. It’s a fun day for us. And it helps out the children, giving them a chance to get to know us.”

Malcom said the bounce houses were provided by Covington Police Who Care. He said food donations were received from Bell’s Grocery.
